To celebrate 20 years of The Hip Hop Project we look back on some of the best moments from the longest running mix show in the country.

2002 was a fun year for THHP. We had just moved from our old downtown studios to new facilities on Loyola’s Rogers Park campus. It was a short drive for Dj TernAround and I. No more near fist fights for parking spaces in front of the radio station. WLUW’s funding had been cut by the school the year before, and one of the ways we raised funds was throwing benefit concerts. Our first try was a success, so we wanted to raise the bar by bringing in an artist with a little more of a national presence.
Longtime friend of the show Rude 1 was working with Louis Logic at the time as part of the Single Minded Pros album. We had been a fan of Lou for years. A few emails later, Lou agreed to do it. It was our first time flying an artist in, so we didn’t know what to expect. Lou brought DJ/Producer JJ Brown with him and they couldn’t have been cooler to work with. They even recorded an original song promoting the event that we played heavily. We even took it to WNUR and WHPK to play it there. You may remember Louis Logic’s nickname was “The Drunken Dragon”. I was only 19 at the time, and I’m sure he thought hanging with us was pretty lame. Sorry, guys.
The concert itself was a disaster. A cigarette company threw a free Common show the same night, and not many people made their way to Mertz Hall that evening. Who knew you could lose money throwing a benefit show? It was a humbling experience for us, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
