To celebrate 20 years of The Hip Hop Project we look back on some of the best moments from the longest running mix show in the country. By CosmRoks (The Voice of The Hip Hop Project, 1998-2010)
So many of these posts aren’t necessarily about me or things that happen during the radio show itself, these memories are about people. Sunday was mothers day so I thought I would dedicate this post to my Wife.
In October of 2000, the new nucleus of THHP (myself, TernAround, Roper) decided to take a Saturday off and let then newcomers Lanx and DJ Eves hold it down for the night. Nights off were super rare for us back then. We were in the process of taking over for Brotha El and Ish and we wanted to be there every single week no matter what. Coincidentally it was also Ish’s birthday. Ismael was the main host of the show in those days and as a surprise someone found a way to bring model Natasha Yi to the radio station. She was featured in Playboy, Maxim, and a staple in one of our favorite mags…Low Rider! Now, we had no idea she was coming through and during those days at the radio station, it was a real sausage fest. 20 dudes in a small space every week! Rappers, DJ’s, promoters, etc, lots of Rap testosterone.
Coincidentally that night was the night my Wife and I had our first date. That was 15 years ago, and we are still together, happily married, and she is the mother of our daughter. I would not have been able to be involved with THHP from 2000-2010 without her support. Every Saturday night I went down to the radio station, leaving not much time for dates or quality time in general. Not just my Wife, but all of our better halves we’re great about supporting us as we did the show for years. They can’t get enough credit for allowing us to go to a non paying job every week as the years went on. We were all bummed we couldn’t meet Natasha Yi that night, but 15 years later, I’m glad I took the night off.
Two of these photos were taken on that night in 2000. The third on my wedding day.
